Vanilla cultivation is popular in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Vanilla is mostly cultivated by small and marginal growers in their fields, inter planting with other crops. It is grown largely in organic situations though not certified.
The Mexican vanilla bean is a thicker and darker bean that has a smooth, strong, rich fragrance and flavor. Some say they are the best beans in the world.
This beans come from the same species, vanilla tahitensis. The only differerence it's the pace of origin, which is Papua New Guinea. PNG beans have a very dark color.
Some of the vanilla plants in the Philippines hybridized with native orchids producing a new species named "vanilla tahitensis". This new hybrid has a somewhat different aroma. Tahitian vanilla beans are thick and almost black in color.
The Madagascar or Madagascar-Bourbon vanilla beans are often referred to as "bourbon beans" because the French first planted the vine on the Isle de Bourbon (later renamed Réunion). These beans have a smooth, rich, sweet flavor and are the thinnest of the vanilla beans grown.
The Ugandan vanilla industry is relatively young. Vanilla is produce in the districs of Mukono, Iganga, Jinja, Mbale, kabarole, Bundibugyo, Masaka, Kesese, and Mpigi. Because there are two annual dry seasons in Ugandan growing regions, two harvests are possible per year.
